Well hey there! Long time no blog, as they say. I don’t know what’s happened to poor bloggy this year but it’s been sadly very neglected - these parts are almost as sad and dusty as the Duolingo app I downloaded last New Year. However! I’ve set myself the challenge of two blog posts per week till the end of the year so let’s see how it goes... Right now I'm aware that I have about as much conviction as when I tell Rob I won’t buy anymore pairs of black boots, but hopefully I’ll surprise myself (and you). Maybe I'll even be writing posts in Spanish by the end of the year, who knows!

I wanted to start back with a post about a magical little getaway in the heart of the 17th Century coastal village of Culross. It's somewhere I hadn’t visited before but had seen pop up on my feed many a time, particularly across the Visit Scotland-esque instagrams. You might even recognise that colourful street above yourself!

We stayed for two nights at the beautiful Design Cottage in Fife, which we found via Kip Hideaways - home to some of the best boutique properties in the UK - and had such a lovely time that I could shout about it until I was blue in the face (which, to be fair, I am a lot these days with how cold it is in Glasgow). It's run by the lovely Laura who is a complete and utter interiors whizz. Not only has she cultivated one of the most relaxing spaces I've been in, she's also decorated it in a way that will leave you wanting to overhaul your entire house.

There are a few brilliant walking trails nearby and the village sits around 45 minutes from Edinburgh, but we ended up spending a large portion of time relaxing in the cottage because we loved it so much. There's an open plan living room and (very well equipped) kitchen, two bedrooms, a mezzanine upstairs with a sofa bed, two bathrooms and an incredible terrace outside. As you can see, we were very lucky with the weather, but I think it would make for the perfect getaway all year round. Me and Rob were actually chatting just the other day about how lovely it would be to visit again in Winter with friends, armed with board games, hot chocolate and food a-plenty. Speaking of food, there are two important food-based points that I need to mention about the cottage. The first is that there is the most fantastically well-stocked tuck shop (that's not the word I'm looking for is it? But I somehow can't seem to find the correct word... Minibar?), which you can see a photo of above. From crisps, to chocolate and biscuits, to nibbles that can be paired with specific drinks, to glass bottles of Irn Bru (the last one particularly excited me) to lots of locally sourced products like coffee, honey and candles, Laura has thought about every single thing you could possibly need during your stay and more. The second, I'm going to capitalise here just to stress how really wonderful it was, THE BREAKFAST. So much care has been put into it. A hamper was delivered each morning, bursting with fresh pastries and bread from a local baker, yoghurt, fresh fruit and juice, muesli, meats, cheese... the list goes on. It was such a special touch and a real highlight of the stay.

Now, as I say, we spent a lot of our time relaxing in the cottage, but when we did venture out we made ourselves very comfortable at the hideaway that is Bessie's Cafe. It was 24 degrees - can I get a collective, 'say what!?' - when we were there, so we sat outside in the sun with our iced coffees and homemade cakes, chatting the afternoon away and pretending we were in Italy. To walk around the beautifully preserved cobbled streets of Culross feels like stepping back in time (in fact, if you're an Outlander fan it may excite you to hear that some scenes were shot here) and no more so than at the beautiful Culross Palace. Tickets were sadly sold out when we were there, but even from the outside it's a special sight to behold!

And that brings to an end a round up of a very lovely stay. I honestly couldn't recommend it more - as you can probably tell - if you'd like to book a stay yourself, or to find out a little more information, you can find the Design Cottage here
